Ocean-continent subduction cannot be initiated without preceding intra-oceanic subduction!

چکیده

The formation of new subduction zones is a key element plate tectonics and the Wilson cycle, many different controlling mechanisms have been proposed to initiate subduction. Here, we provide brief overview known scenarios initiation in intra-oceanic ocean-continent tectonic settings. Intra-oceanic most commonly associated with mechanical heterogeneities within oceanic lithosphere, such as pre-existing fracture zones, spreading ridges, transform faults. Numerous well-recognized examples active formed environments during Cenozoic, suggesting that ocean-ocean must be routine process occurs “easily frequently” mode currently operating on Earth. On contrary, traditional for establishment classic self-sustaining subduction—passive margin collapse transference—are surprisingly rare observations difficult reproduce numerical models. Two alternative scenarios—polarity reversal lateral propagation-induced initiation—are contrast much better documented nature experimentally. However, switching polarity due arc-continent collision transmission subducting boundaries are both inextricably linked convergence. We, therefore, conclude onset possible only through transition from former system. This likely facilitated by ductile damage accumulation stress concentration across aging continental margin. From this perspective, future closure Atlantic Ocean can viewed an archetypal example role transitional between (Lesser Antilles) development zone at passive (eastern North America).

Reaction-induced rheological weakening enables oceanic plate subduction

Earth is the only terrestrial planet in our solar system where an oceanic plate subducts beneath an overriding plate. Although the initiation of plate subduction requires extremely weak boundaries between strong plates, the way in which oceanic mantle rheologically weakens remains unknown. Here we show that shear-enhanced hydration reactions contribute to the generation and maintenance of weak ...

Subduction Zones

[1] Subduction zones are where sediments, oceanic crust, and mantle lithosphere return to and reequilibrate with Earth’s mantle. Subduction zones are interior expressions of Earth’s 55,000 km of convergent plate margins and are the geodynamic system that builds island arcs. Excess density of the mantle lithosphere in subduction zones provides most of the power needed to move the plates while in...

Subduction zone rheology

Rheological flow laws can be obtained from studies using multi-anvil high-pressure systems with synchrotron-based piezometers and strain metrics. The high flux X-ray source provides minute-scale time resolution with accurate measurement of diffraction patterns and direct sample images. Measurements of length changes with an accuracy of one part in 104 are being developed and will provide a new ...

Episodic Precambrian subduction

The Precambrian geological record shows peak of activity at 1.1, 1.9–2.1, 2.7 and 3.5 Ga, often associated with massive crustal production, orogenesis and supercontinent cycles. It has been suggested that these bursts of tectonic activity are due to mantle avalanche events, where accumulating subducted slabs periodically penetrate the 670 km discontinuity, and subsequent upwelling counterflow a...

India–Asia convergence driven by the subduction of the Greater Indian continent

The most spectacular example of a plate convergence event on Earth is the motion of the Indian plate towards Eurasia at speeds in excess of 18 cmyr−1 (ref. 1), and the subsequent collision. Continental buoyancy usually stalls subduction shortly after collision, as is seen in most sections of the Alpine–Himalayan chain. However, in the Indian section of this chain, plate velocities were merely r...
